Ainslie Helmcken, grandson of John Sebastian Helmcken and son of James and Edith Helmcken, served as Victoria's City Archivist from 1967 to 1983.

The fonds was rearranged in 2013. The rearrangement involved the reordering of a few series and the grouping together of two related series. The original foldering was left intact. At this time, other Helmcken-related accessions were added to the fonds.

General note
Most of the records in this fonds were found in Ainslie Helmcken’s desk when he retired from the City. Other records were donated to the Archives by Helmcken during his tenure as City Archivist. The fonds was initially part of the Helmcken collection (PR 252). When it was first separated from PR 252, it consisted of accession 199708-02. The following accessions were added at a later date: 196609-01; 198204-04; 198208-14; 198210-15; 198212-13; 198302-01; 198312-17; 198407-27; 198409-01; 198801-14; 199708-02.
