Fonds consists of glass plate negatives and 4x5 and 35mm black and white safety film negatives taken by staff and free lance photographers for the Daily Colonist and the Victoria Daily Times, The Express and the Times-Colonist newspapers. The negatives date from approximately 1938 to 1991.
The negatives relate to the following subjects: news events; scenes of the city and surrounding area including buildings, city streets, and views; some up-island locations including Duncan, Nanaimo and Ladysmith; commercial and industrial activities such as store fronts and interiors, and manufacturing operations; sporting events; military personnel and activities; war effort activities; recreational activities; school and church activities; transportation and shipbuilding as well as individual and group portraits which appeared in the “Society” section. The latter include anniversary, wedding, christening and engagement portraits.
